Last year was full up bumps and surprises, but we stuck it out friends. Here are some highlights from the past year.
It's Lit in partnership with The Wilmington Library launched March 3rd, 2020. Can you believe that the fellowship was face to face! It seems like forever since we've conregated without masks. The mixer consisted of games, raffled prizes, and small bites. A lovely time.
“At the center of it all, is community”
We emphasized the importance of the book club being a space for community and healing. A place for the voice of authors across the diaspora to be amplified. One of our members echoed that "at the center of it all, is community." We are a space for youth, adults, and families. All are welcome.
Then, we went virtual.
For the remainder of the year, all meetings were hosted virtually. Thank goodness for Zoom!
Below are the books discussed each month.
Oh! We also had a few moments for It's LIT to shine in some other community spaces.
March - The New Jim Crow and Netflix Watch Party, Ava Duvernay's 13th - The Documentary
April - Parable of The Sower, Octavia Butler
May/June - Forty Acres, Dwayne Alexander Smith & presented It's Lit to Wilmington City Council
July - Passport Diaries, facilitated by Jasmine Nathaniel & Saliym Cooper, Brevity Bookspace
August - Co-Hosted Soul Refresh, Bibliotheraphy Event with Be Black in Peace and Brevity Bookspace, and hosted the Black Powher, Summer Reading Challenge
September - All About Love, bell hooks, facilitated by Keya Stanley & Shawn'Ere Jackson
October/November - Soledad Brother, George Jackson's Prison Letters
December - How to be an antiracist, Ibram Kendi & Hosted First Annual Book Drive
So, we had quite the year. Many things to reflect on and much to express gratitude toward. Lots of books, Lots of discussion.
Well, it's a New Year!
Looking forward to new books and inspiring and elevating discussion with you!
